Government and BlackRock promoting each other – Part 1

BlackRock stands with Labour to announce a $2b New Zealand net zero Fund, but it’s all intention at this point. In reality, no agreement is really necessary for BlackRock to invest in NZ. Just follow the rules like everybody else. Labour is campaigning off BlackRock’s name. Should voters be concerned about what BlackRock may want should Labour win the election?

NZ First gains momentum heading into the election

Latest polling shows NZ First is on track to get back into Parliament. Despite NZ First, National/ACT are polling well and may form a majority by themselves. If NZ First fails to get in, National/ACT would be even more likely to form a majority. This means voters who prefer the right over the left can afford to risk a vote for NZ First.

Factors affecting NZ media coverage of Treaty of Waitangi issues

It’s surprising how little debate there is in the media over Treaty of Waitangi arguments, such as co-governance. Perhaps it’s something to do with the fact that most journalists lean left and agree with the Government’s left leaning interpretation. Large sums of Government money for aligned media probably also helped shape coverage (or lack of it).

Proposed Changes to Retirement Village Regulations

The Government is set to review the Retirement Villages Act 2003 after 20 years. Numbers of retirees are projected to be more than 81,000 people by 2033 – up from around 48,000 today. The proposals generally call for more regulation, and tip things in favour of the residents, but not excessively.

A tragedy marred the start, but FIFA Women’s World Cup a roaring success

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 is poised to be one of history’s most successful sports events -men or women. A shooting in downtown Auckland that was unrelated to the event, nonetheless cast a pall on the opener. The event, however, has been positive for women’s sport and led to many sports infrastructure upgrades throughout NZ.

Is it appropriate for the Government to endorse BlackRock because others may think it will get special treatment? The Government implies NZ leadership and ingenuity in renewables is being endorsed, but is NZ leading? What’s BlackRock actually saying? It will take much more than $2b to reach 100% renewables (if possible). Are there better ways to reduce CO2?

Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing.
