What is “woke”?

“Woke” was a slang term amongst African Americans in regards to staying alert to racism and discrimination. The term was appropriated by far left activists to include identity politics, sexism and practically all causes relating to the poorly understood “social justice”. Practically anyone politically to the right is then deemed “far right”.

Economic update, April 2023

New Zealand posts the highest food price inflation since 1989, largely driven by costs of fresh produce. Meanwhile, medical staffing shortages said to be causing unsafe working conditions. Property prices continue to decline, while Reserve Bank interest rates are pushed up yet again.

New strategy – don’t call it co-governance

Hipkins says co-governance is not part of the water forms, nor ever has been. Someone should tell Nanaia Mahuta that. Co-governance doesn’t have a formal definition, but it invariably calls for undermining democracy in favour of unelected iwi representation. Regardless of how Hipkins wants to define it, removing “one person, one vote” accountability is deeply unpopular with New Zealanders.

State-funded media outlets labelled on Twitter…and they don’t like it

Twitter is forcing news outlets that take government money to carry a header on their account. Many on the left are upset and say the labels hurt their credibility. RNZ now carries the label “Government-funded media” and they don’t like it, but many on the political right are applauding the move.

If Tusiata Avia’s poem isn’t racist, then what is?

The Media Council says Tusiata Avia’s poem celebrating the killing of James Cook and “white men like him” is not racist. As long as work is perceived to be “punching up at a more powerful race and gender”, the Media Council says its not hate. Are Kiwis going to lose faith in groups that are as partisan as the Media Council?

The unknown story of the Parliament protest –Part 1

Media coverage of the February 2022 Parliament protest was heavily biassed. The public were never invited to draw their own conclusions but were fed a predetermined diet of anti-protest content. Reports virtually ignored the fundamental reason for the protest: the creation of an underclass.
