Posie Parker sparks controversy in NZ

Parker’s NZ appearance has been controversial amongst politicians, media and LGBTQI+ activists. Scuffles broke out at her Auckland event. Parker was doused with tomato juice. Activists “feel” unsafe. However, protesters intimidating behaviour forced Parker to cancel appearances. Green co-leader Marama Davidson: “I am a prevention violence minister and I know who causes violence in the world. It is white cis-men.”

How reliable are the extreme weather records in NZ?

Ian Wishart says the ranking of Cyclone Gabrielle is skewed because major historical events were not part of the comparison. Wishart says the missing data suggests violent storms were more frequent in the late 1800s. Maybe it is journalists and not evidence that says Gabrielle is proof positive there is a climate emergency.

Parents and families to receive a little more cash

Increases to the Government’s childcare subsidies scheme and an increase in the Working for Families Tax Credits will take effect from 1 April 2023. The childcare subsidy threshold is tied to wage growth. Family tax credit increases are linked to inflation. Higher inflation means a bigger scheduled increase than usual.

Onslow to cost a lot more than thought

The proposed Lake Onslow pumped hydro scheme is estimated at almost $16b. Pumped hydro is to act as a battery but only works in limited circumstances. The project would take more than a decade to complete. Shouldn’t that be enough to discourage spending more money?

“Inclusive” Government sex ed guidelines reject many

Guidelines from the Ministry of Education aim to teach sexuality in every area of primary and secondary school curricula. The guidelines are optional, but included in the Education Review Office’s “indicators of effective practice”. They explicitly attack social norms and promote homosexuality and transgenderism to children.

March 2023, economic update

New Zealand’s Quarterly GDP is in decline. Property prices continue their 13 month decline. Food prices hit 30 year highs. Banking failures overseas lead to bailout loans that already dwarf those made during the GFC.
