Egg industry cracks
Well intentioned "lifestyle" improvement for birds, but farmers are collateral damage. Eggs are now being rationed and the shortage is expected to last 5 months.  Even with years notice, the transition is not going smoothly.

MMP turns 30
To become a MP you have to either win the district vote or be appointed from a list based on the separate party vote. List MPs occur only if their party vote is higher (but subject to a minimum)  than their district seat count. The value of your vote can  be increased by supporting aligned parties.

Immigration numbers are way down 
Stats show NZ is losing population with a net migration loss of about 8400 people over the past year.  While NZ generally ranks high as a destination for migrants, its appeal is slipping.  Only three applications –that are in limbo –under the new Active Investor Plus visa since the rollout in 2022.

Government proposes to treat vaping more like smoking
The Government is requesting feedback on its Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Amendment Act. The bill seeks to add restrictions such as where vape products can be sold. Smoking in schools is down to near 1%, but 10% now vape. The corner store industry says the law picks winners and would be a boon to gangs.

Tourism update
500,000+ tourists expected through March 2023. The Government says its Tourism Industry Transformation Plan will create jobs and reduce environmental impact. But, unless Chinese tourism picks up substantially, many are sceptical about the ‘boom times’ Minister Stuart Nash is predicting.  Tourism GDP is down around 40% from pre-COVID levels.

Why is co-governance controversial? 
Co-governance wasn’t campaigned on by Labour in the 2020 general election. It has been acutely contentious when it violates the principle of one person-one vote.  Former Prime Minister Jim Bolger has called for clarity on Labour’s intentions around co-governance.   Co-governance is not an enshrined right, it boils down to party policy so vote accordingly.
