Government makes “pay equity” offer to Te Whatu Ora nurses. What does this mean?

Te Whatu Ora-Health NZ nurses offered $1.5 billion dollars more in their “pay equity settlement”. Pay equity means arbitrarily deciding what work equivalent to nursing is done by mostly men. The pay for that determines the nurses’ pay. The pay is not set at the same amount as the comparator job, but at the “right” ratio to that job. Is Pay Equity comparing apples (nurses) to oranges (mechanical engineers)?

What should voters make of organised crime’s endorsements of Labour?

The consultancy Hard2Reach (H2R) has received millions of dollars in taxpayer funding under Labour, working to help with gang problems. Harry Tam of H2R, an honorary Mongrel Mob member, actively supports a Labour/Green coalition. Labour says an appearance by an MP at a Mob hui was accidental. National doesn’t think so. What should voters think of NZ’s largest gang campaigning for Labour and the Greens?

Fluoridation in the water still troubling for some

Bloomfield mandated local councils to add fluoride to water supplies, when some had chosen not to. This is despite conflicting conclusions on its safety and effectiveness, including a draft landmark US government study, questioning the effects on brain development. This is the classic struggle between those who favour more natural health and those who are inclined towards drugs or chemicals. National supported local councils losing the right to decide.

Green party rolls out housing rent control policy

The Green Party advocates for rent control starting right after the election. Opponents argue the controls will worsen the housing problem as landlords exit the market. The Prime Minister says Labour isn’t backing the proposal. Landlords are an easy target for the media.

NZ media happy to repeat empty accusations of racism

There’s no downside for the left in accusing the right of racism. Racist “dog whistling” is code for sending a seemingly innocent, but racist signal to your supporters that others can’t hear. Racism against whites filed under “nothing to see here”, but US Supreme Court disagrees. Left-leaning media are happy to support the accusation and pretend it’s news.

RATs! Foiled again. Expired COVID tests costing taxpayers over $120M so far

Health NZ has over $400M worth of unused COVID tests (RATs). About a third are expiring now and the rest in early 2024. Government chose to control the NZ RAT market, to stop potential price gouging. But waste for unused RATs likely to be $80-$100 for each NZ resident.
