UN stokes voting age debate

The UN calls for the voting age around the world to be lowered. A lower voting age favours the left and is in line with a lot of “progressive” causes favoured by the UN. Isn’t the everyday Kiwi just as well equipped as supposed experts to decide if they think 16 year olds should vote ?

ACT or National voters can possibly get a 3-for-1 for their party vote

If ACT and/or National supporters use their party vote to get NZ First from 3% to 5%, it’s 4 extra aligned MPs. How? If NZ First gets over the threshold, this means 6 centre-right NZ First MPs. ACT and/or National probably only lose 2. Polls indicate right-leaning parties will win if their party vote is effectively combined.

National attempts to woo primary industry

National has released its new plan to reduce agricultural emissions, which includes delaying the start date for farmers to pay an emissions tax. The proposals get kudos from the agriculture industry with Federated Farmers giving it five stars. Biotech is also showing support for National’s plan to lift decades old restrictions on genetic research. Labour and Green view it as a delay tactic.

Green Party tax policy could burn a lot of CO2 with wealthy leaving

Tax cuts and guaranteed income for those making under $125,000. Hikes for those making more, including a wealth tax. Wealth taxes can be a nightmare to administer. Greens provide no detail on this. Greens say the policy will pull in over $12 billion per year from the richest 0.7 percent, but this number appears to be a wild guess.

Secondary school teachers ramp up strike activity, and get paid while doing it

Secondary school teachers are still striking, but primary school teachers accept a new contract. Teachers continue to be paid through rolling strikes. Parents and students bear the brunt of constant disruptions. Universities are reporting fewer students interested in becoming teachers.

Are we reaching peak Treaty in New Zealand?

The Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi) now applies to outer space. Does traditional Māori knowledge really apply here? Yes, says New Zealand’s Space Agency. Does this symbolise us reaching “peak Treaty”? Or “peak bureaucracy”?
